Capetown 2010–The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization

Kendall, thanks for posting about this. I’m in Cape Town, and if I can find time, I may try to send out some brief email updates.
Anglicans have a huge role in this conference. Abp. Orombi of Uganda is the chair of the event and among the chief organizers, and he will lead the opening celebration tomorrow night. Also +Ben Kwashi, of Jos in Nigeria is one of the speakers and has written two of the Advance papers for the Congress. I know of at least 8 other Anglican bishops that are here and will be participating as well.
What an immense privilege to attend this gathering of 4000+ leaders from over 200 countries. I can’t wait to see what God does among and through this gathering! Very excited and expectant….!

I knew that ++Henry Orombi was the chairman of this momentous event, but looking over the list of leaders highlighted on the homepage, I was delighted to ++John Chew listed as well. Not to mention such non-Anglican worthies as Leighton Ford, Rick Warren, and Jack Hayford, just to note a few.
One hundred years ago, the international missionary conference at Edinburgh launched the modern ecumenical movement. One of the things that made it such an epoch-making event is that it included not only evangelical Protestants of all sorts, but Anglo-Catholic leaders too (including the great +Charles Gore). I’m delighted to see the vast range of orthodox theological perspectives and Christian traditions involved in this truly global event.
I’m sure that with ++Henry Orombi acting as the overall chairman, his American assistant for International Relations, the Rev. Alison Barfoot (a friend), has been very heavily involved in the planning and execution of this huge event for a very long time.
I’m excited and expectant too, Karen. Thanks for offering to help those of us who can’t be in Capetown to catch some of the flavor and richness of this important global gathering.

If you have time, check out the original Lausanne Covenant from 1974. As stated above, this represented the consensus of both Anglicans and evangelical protestants: Christian unity of purpose at its best. The current TEC leadership would gag at the thought of it.
